OCTOBER MEETING:
Reconstructing by Layering: Breaking Down and Building Anew
Our newest member, JEAN FOWLEY, did an AMAZING JOB sharing her creative process with us. Her body of work reflects her evolution as a collage artist; each piece is complex, interesting and fun to explore. A native of the Rochester area, Fowley moved around the country, taking classes in Seattle, Boston and New York City. In her early years as an artist, she enjoyed representational art, especially portraiture. However, she now balances representational with the creative freedom of collage. An enthusiastic presenter, Fowley described how she moves between layers of paint and collage, cutting photos of things she finds inspirational. (She enjoys the color in graffiti images and often uses this in her work.) She paints, cuts, pastes, and repeats the process, adding and subtracting, cutting and experimenting until things feel right. After Fowley’s presentation and demonstration, members had a chance to create their own piece, enjoying the spontaneity and freedom of the process and the vibrancy and energy of the results!

I was born in Manabi, Ecuador's most beautiful province. Some of my paintings reflect memories from there. I have been interested in drawing ever sinceI was a kid. It was my favorite hobby. I had always dreamed of becoming a designer of sorts when I was older. Eventually, after I moved to Rochester, I got a degree from MCC in graphic design. It wasn't until the last decade that I took up painting. Everything I've learned about this type of art has been through self-guided learning. Painting has become very therapeutic for me. I love it! It's a blessing to be part of the Webster Art Club and I'm truly grateful for it!

Art has been an enjoyable activity for as long as I can remember. Probably you could call me "An Art Nerd." After having a very creative and slightly quirky Art teacher in fifth grade, the idea of becoming an Art teacher was born. I have never been sorry.
For about 30 years I taught at all levels, but High School Art filled about 90% of my teaching years. I love High School students for their honesty and ability to always amaze.
After retiring, painting and creating almost everyday is my great love.
The Webster Art Club has been the perfect addition. Spending time with other artists gives me support, love and great friendships. If you are interested in creating art as a beginner or experienced artist, the Webster Art Club is a great place to socialize, create and grow.

This is our favorite meeting of the year! We are always impressed by the art making and presentation skills of our high school students! Thank you to the students and Webster art teachers for participating in this annual event!
April meeting:
Pyllis Bryce Ely
Pyllis Bryce Ely
“It’s Not the Output; It’s the Experience”
These words of artistic wisdom from artist Phyllis Bryce Ely began WAC’s April meeting on Plein Air painting. This highly informative and inspirational presentation reflected Bryce-Ely’s challenges, suggestions, humorous experiences and many successes as a Plein-air artist. She suggested one not always focus on the finished product but to enjoy the experience of painting outdoors which brings a direct connection to nature. Tips were given on how to prepare materials beforehand to facilitate a smooth outdoor experience given different weather conditions. Phyllis Bryce Ely left our members ready to go outside and start painting!

A life-long resident of Webster, Sara has always been interested in art. She graduated from Thomas HS with a strong art background, having taken classes with teacher Bill Stephens. Sara has been a member of the Webster Art Club for over twenty years and is currently the club’s longest participating member and even served as its president in the past. She enjoys the friendly nature of the club and likes the community spirit it provides.
Sara has studied under many of the area’s well know painters: Chris Kolupsky, Brian O’Neill, Pat Tribastone, Rosa Montante (oils) and Wendy Gwirtzman (watercolor), and has taken other workshops both nationally and internationally. Sara has an expressive style to her painting and many are impressed to see how quickly she often works! She also likes making creative mosaic pieces.
Besides being a wonderful artist, Sara is now also enjoying being a grandma to her two new granddaughters Della and Ava. Watch for some nice portraits in the future!

May Meeting : Jim Williams, Painter
Bold colors, detailed and realistic are three descriptors that one could use to describe Jim William’s paintings. As a painter, William favors acrylic paint, but has also worked in watercolor. His organized planning and deliberate approach to painting is evidenced by the filling of the canvas from top to bottom, left to right; a palette that reflects the colors he needs, a minimal amount of color mixing that happens on the canvas; and a slower and examined application of paint to canvas, not one that is rushed or highly textured with thick paint. Williams was an engineer for Xerox, and his painting method reflects an engineer’s mindset. But his finished work reflects that of an artist; engaging to look at, colorful and full of interesting details.
